Amsterdam Data Science

Following up the publication of the Study Group paper in PLoS Biology, I got invited to draft a publication in the Amsterdam Science Magazine.

Summary

Biology has now become a data intensive field due to the exponential growth of several fields especially in genomics (DNA sequencing) and ‘omics’ (proteomics, metabolomics) and imaging (digital imaging of plants, brain imaging). Therefore, learning how to program in computer languages such as Python or R has become a valuable asset for the common life scientists.

Yet, practically, most life scientists have to learn programming and data science on their own or through short one-time training events. Fueled by social sciences and especially the work of Etienne Wenger, we describe, in a recent publication, how small ‘communities of practice’ of life scientists can help to make this learning process easier and more efficient. By sharing good practices in programming among peers, supporting each other and sharing their practical know-how, it creates a safe-learning environment where scientific and personal progress can be made. Mastering cutting-edge Machine Learning (Artificial Intelligence) techniques or applying the most recent methodology on wet laboratory experimental data become feasible and even fun!
